The New Spring: The Novel is a prequel to the Eye of The World. There are three major characters in the beginning of this book. They are Lan, Moiraine, and Siuan.

Lan Mandragoran is a borderland commander in the Aiel War. He is a king, by right, of Malkieri, a nation that fell into the Blight when he was a child. Twenty men removed him to safety, but only one still lives, his name is Bukama. These men taught and raised Lan. All that remains for Lan of Malkieri is a power-foraged sword and ring of the Malkieri Kings, a locket with his parents’ paintings, and an oath that pledges him to fight the evil of the blight.

Moiraine Damodred is an Accepted in the White Tower. She could be a contester for the throne in Cairhien, because her uncle was the king in Cairhien. Her parents orphaned her so her uncle brought her up in the Sun Palace. Her education went beyond a normal person’s because of this. She was born with the spark and she was a Novice for only three years. She and Siuan have grown in step with the power. They both entered the Tower on the same day and both became an Accepted on the same day.

Siuan Sanche is also an Accepted in the White Tower. She was a fisherman’s daughter, and also an orphan. She was born with the spark in Tear. She could barley write when she came to the Tower but she quickly mastered it. She is good at solving puzzles and is quick at picking out patterns. She and Moiraine are the same age and same strength, and they are really good friends.

Chapter One

This book starts off by introducing us to Lan and Bukama. They are commanding a portion of an army that will act as the “Anvil”, while another army is the “Hammer,” to crush the Aiel. The Aiel turn away after shouting “Aan’allein” at Lan, and Lan decides to meet up with the “Hammer” before perusing the Aiel. Lan’s translation of “Aan’allein” is One Man Alone, but he has no idea what it means.

Chapter Two

The scene shifts to the Amyrlin’s sitting room, where Siuan and Moiraine are waiting upon the Amyrlin, Tamra Ospenya, and her Keeper, Gitara Moroso. Gitara has a Foretelling where she says, “He is born again! I feel him! The Dragon takes his first breath on the slope of Dragonmount! He is coming! He is coming! Light help us! Light help the world! He lies in the Snow and cries like thunder! He Burns like the sun!” With that she died of shock. The Amyrlin threatens Moiraine and Siuan to secrecy about the death of her Keeper; she makes them swear that Gitara died without saying a word.
