Pride

My definition of pride is a feeling of conceit either for; one of your abilities as a person, abilities in other people, or for a country that you think is the best of the best. I am proud of my ability to maintain an honor roll status at school. People in general should be proud of good things in people and good things that they have done. It is good to have a little bit of pride in your country but not enough so that you start being proud of negative qualities like dictatorships and death.

A way that pride is a good thing is the way we feel about ourselves, to a point. Human beings are dependant upon approval from both, yourself and from others. The way we give ourselves approval is by being proud of what we do. Pride in a sense contributes to the survival of creativity and intuition, by allowing people to feel pride for their work and encouraging them to continue with more work. Another way that pride is a good thing is by making people try to improve their work. If a person doesn’t have enough pride in their work they will not try and better themselves by improving their work

A way that pride is a bad thing is when we have too much pride we can become arrogant, selfish, and can lose control of what we are doing. If a person has too much pride they could not listen to opinions of others, and if the opinion was against what they believe they might react violently. Another way pride can be bad is that it can be debilitating. If a person has so much pride that they will not ask for help, it can be a problem that could cause them to not progress in their work.

Pride can get people into trouble by getting them hurt or provoke them to hurt other people. Pride can hurt careers. If someone is not going to finish a project by the deadline, and they are too stuck-up from pride that they don’t ask for an extension they could lose their job.

An elderly woman was proud that she could still drive even though her doctor recommended that she stop because of her failing eyesight. The doctor advised her to take the bus or ask someone in her family to drive her, because her eyesight could put her or someone else in danger. Well, she decided to drive herself because the pride blinded her of her faults. One day she went out driving to the store, and she wound up crashing into another car, both her and the person she crashed into were severely injured. She was so proud in her ability to drive that she hurt herself and other people. Pride obviously created a problem in this situation; it caused a woman to severely injure herself, and the other person.

This is my reflection on pride.
